  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Kevin De Bruyne is set to leave Manchester City on a free transfer this summer, with teams all over the world now pushing to sign the legendary midfielder. One of the clubs making overtures is the Chicago Fire, according to one report, with the MLS club making an approach to sign the Belgian star.

  De Bruyne will reportedly continue to assess his options, but the Fire have shown a legitimate interest in bringing in the midfielder. It isn't the Fire's first attempt at a big swing, as the club previously pushed to sign Neymar before the Brazilian star made the decision to return to Brazil and childhood club Santos.

  Widely seen as one of the best players of his generation, De Bruyne has won six Premier League titles with Manchester City while also lifting two FA Cups, five Carabao Cups and a Champions League trophy.

  From an MLS perspective, NYCFC, Inter Miami and Chicago are all among potential landing spots.

  THE BIGGER PICTURE

  The Fire aren't the only MLS club to have been linked with De Bruyne. San Diego FC were long rumored to be the favorites to sign him, but reports emerged recently saying that the club is no longer in the race to sign the Manchester City star.

  It was later reported that Inter Miami hold his MLS Discovery Rights, which would mean there is at least a semi-legitimate chance he could head to Miami. However, the club's current Designated Player situation would make that difficult unless De Bruyne were willing to take a substantial paycut to play alongside Lionel Messi and co. in South Beach.

  The Fire, meanwhile, have room to add a Designated Player to join current stars Jonathan Bamba and Hugo Cuypers, but would need to acquire his rights from Miami.
